The story of the much-talked-about life, times and music of Afropop immortal, Brenda Fassie, will soon be coming to the big screen.
Brenda: The True Story, as the film is tentatively titled, will be produced by UK-based company ShowbizBee who acquired the rights to the story.
Like most films based on South African heroes, the film is also set to be directed by a non-South African, in this case, British director, Edward W Shaw.
However, Bongani Fassie will be involved in the production as a co-executive producer, according to the film’s concept poster. The script for Brenda: The True Story is apparently based on a story by former Jozi member.
In the meantime, ShowbizBee has announced that the cast would be entirely South African and that auditions for the role of Brenda Fassie would be held through an open casting call. Details on how hopeful actors can land the gig will only be announced at a later date.
The movie is slated for a 2018 release date even though filming has not yet commenced. Meanwhile, people online have been debating who should get the role of Brenda Fassie since the news officially broke.
